Martin Jol says Fulham reluctantly allowed Bobby Zamora to head for Queens Park Rangers on deadline day because the club will always be more important than one player.
With it clear that the England international wanted out, the Cottagers were wary of forcing an unsettled star to stay.
In the end, they reached an agreement with QPR that suited all parties and the striker was allowed to try his luck elsewhere.
Jol would rather not have parted with a player of Zamora's calibre, but admits there would have been little point in putting his squad harmony in jeopardy by retaining the services of a want-away star.
He said: "The team is the star. It is not about one player. Of course, Bobby was a good player for Fulham but he wanted to move.
"You cannot have a situation where everyone likes you but Bobby was well-liked so there was not a big problem."
Jol added: "When a player wants to move there is always something. Maybe it was money, maybe it was personal problems, maybe he had a problem with me.
"I don't think there was a bust-up but sometimes as a manager you have to try and get your point across and maybe he was not happy about that.
"Bobby wanted to move so we had to wait for a good offer and QPR made a good offer."
