Newcastle have been hit with the news that striker Leon Best faces up to six weeks on the sidelines after suffering medial ligament damage in the home win against Aston Villa.
The Republic of Ireland international was involved in an early collision with Stephen Warnock and was substituted after just 14 minutes.
And now manager Alan Pardew has revealed that the 25-year-old faces a lengthy spell out of action.
He said: "It was unfortunate for Leon, he's done great for us.
"I was hoping that Leon would play for 65 to 70 minutes and do a job for us to get us in the lead, then we'd bring Papiss Cisse on to lift the place.
"Besty has hurt his medial ligament, and usually it's a six-week lay-off."
There was some good news for Ryan Taylor, who was carried off in the first half at St James' Park with an ankle injury, with Pardew confirming the full-back did not suffer any break ahead of the weekend clash at Tottenham.
"I think Ryan will be OK," added Pardew
"He's got a big swelling on his ankle, and we know it's not broken. That's good news.
"We've set up Tottenham now. We haven't done well in London. Maybe we'll do something - we'll see."
