Phil Bardsley has called on his team-mates to make up for their West Brom horror show with the fans by dishing out the pain in Sunday's derby with Newcastle.
Sunderland fans looked on in shock as the Baggies thumped four past the woeful Black Cats without reply in their worst display since Martin O'Neill took over as manager.
And Bardsley says the defeat is the wake-up call the team needed ahead of the crunch game against their bitter rivals.
He said: "It was a reality check. We didn't turn up and we didn't have a go. We were beaten early doors, which is not good enough.
"We gave the ball away and we were sloppy all over the pitch. We were second-best to everything.
"We never established ourselves in the game. We did not get to stop crosses. Every header, every second challenge, they won.
"We all know in ourselves what we did wrong. We did not see it coming. The dressing room is a different sort of place to what it has been.
"We have to dust ourselves down and go again for a massive game next week. I just hope it never happens again because that was just not good enough.
"Every one of us was way below par and we are honest enough to admit that and It is up to us to put it right."
