Oastler proving critics wrong

Defender Joe Oastler has enjoyed proving the doubters wrong during his break-out season with Torquay, who have been in-form of late.

The 21-year-old full-back has featured prominently for the Gulls during their rise to sixth place in League Two. Tipped by bookmakers to struggle this season, Torquay have relied on a relatively small but tight-knit squad to grind out the results which have left them with a superb chance of reproducing the successes of last season and making the play-offs. And, all in all, that has made for a terrific term for Oastler. "I spoke to some people at the start of the season and they were writing us off and if you looked at the bookies they said we didn't have a chance either," he said. "There's not a lot of us here, there's about 20 if you count the young pros as well, so it's a small squad but we're all together and we're all in the same boat. "We're playing for each other and that's important with a small squad. As long as that keeps happening we can look at the top three, we just have to keep on winning."
