Defender would welcome chance to extend Portman Road career

Ipswich defender Tommy Smith is keen to secure an extension to his contract with the Portman Road club. The New Zealand international was on target for the Tractor Boys in their 3-0 win over Bristol City on Saturday after jetting across the globe last week. The 21-year-old featured for his country in their 3-2 loss to Jamaica in midweek but showed no ill-effects from his lengthy journey as he slotted seamlessly back into Championship action. And the youngster, who has previously taken in spells on loan with Stevenage, Brentford and Colchester, hopes his commitment to the cause will help persuade manager Paul Jewell to offer him improved terms. He said: "It's a 24,000-mile round trip but it was never going to stop me playing in this one. "I haven't spoken to the gaffer about a new contract but he knows I want to stay."
