Rangers' Sone Aluko has revealed the health concerns around Fabrice Muamba have put his life as a professional footballer into perspective.
The two were team-mates at Birmingham City and Aluko, along with the rest of the football world, was shocked to see Muamba suffer a cardiac arrest while on the pitch at the weekend.
Bolton midfielder Muamba is now making a steady recovery but the gravity of his plight has forced the Rangers winger to examine his own priorities.
"These moments really put the game, and life, in perspective," he told the club's official website.
"What we do is a blessing and even at the low points you can't forget that it isn't as bad as what could happen.
"I was with Fabrice for a couple of seasons at Birmingham and he's a top boy. Everyone who meets him genuinely has a lot of time for him."
Bolton manager Owen Coyle revealed that he spoke briefly with his midfield dynamo on Tuesday afternoon and Aluko is encouraged by the news.
"I'm happy to hear that he's talking and starting to move so hopefully he recovers fully soon," he added.
"His improvement is great news, for his family first and foremost, and for him of course. For his partner and his family, his health is the most important thing.
"For football in general it's good news because nobody wants to see a player that ill.
"Even though we have rivalries and competitiveness in the game, everyone has pulled together and thought 'this is more important than who you support'."
