Championship sides eyes Australian defender

Sky Sports understands Watford and Burnley are among a number of Championship clubs fighting for York City's James Meredith. The 24-year-old defender excelled for the Minstermen this season, helping them win promotion back to the Football League following an eight-year gap. The Australian left-back can also play in midfield having started in the middle of the park in Sunday's 2-1 win over Luton Town at Wembley. Meredith has experience of league football having played for Chesterfield and Shrewsbury after coming through the ranks at Derby. The defender's contract expires this summer and he is able to leave the Bootham Crescent club on a free transfer.
