France coach Laurent Blanc is hoping for a 'pleasant surprise' regarding the fitness of Yann M'Vila and Blaise Matuidi ahead of their opening Euro 2012 game against England.
The midfield duo were initially expected to sit out next Monday's encounter in Donetsk, but Blanc has not given up hope of M'Vila and Matuidi being available.
M'Vila suffered an ankle injury during the early stages of France's friendly win over Serbia last week, while Matuidi is carrying a thigh complaint.
There were initial fears that reported Arsenal target M'Vila could miss the entire tournament, but Blanc is pleased with the Rennes midfielder's progress.
"He's doing better, much better," said Blanc. "He's an important element.
"There's also the injury to Blaise, which is going in the right direction.
"They're significant injuries and it'll be very tight for the first match but there's still a chance of a pleasant surprise."
France round off their preparations for the European Championship against Estonia on Tuesday, and M'Vila and Matuidi will not feature.
