Powell fee to come in handy

Steve Davis says Nick Powell's sale to Manchester United will benefit Crewe's plans for the future as they prepare for life in League One.

England Under-18 star Powell secured a dream move to Old Trafford earlier this month, but Davis expects most of the funds from the deal to be invested back into Alex's famed youth system and cover a shortfall in financial figures from last year. "It is well documented that the club made a loss last season and the fee we have received for Nick will only help us cover those losses and take that into the next couple of seasons," Davis told the Railwaymen's official website. "If a player was to become available where a fee was involved then I know the chairman and the board would be prepared to let me have some money to spend. We will continue to survive within our means and my budget won't be greatly affected by Nick going. "Last season we had one of the smallest budgets in League Two and I'm sure we will have one of the smallest budgets again in League One. "We won't go silly and continue to be sensible because we have to safeguard the future of the club. We have some fantastic young players at the club and I have great faith in them."
