Everton captain Phil Neville believes the swift summer signing of Steven Naismith will alert the entire squad ahead of their pre-season campaign.
Scotland international Naismith signed a four-year contract with the Toffees earlier this week following the demise of his former club Rangers.
Neville admits Everton are not accustomed to acquiring new players so early in the summer, but welcomes Naismith's arrival with open arms.
"It's a massive boost," he told the Liverpool Echo of the signing.
"I think when you get somebody new in the dressing room it challenges the whole squad, it lifts morale and it provides challenges to all the team - one, to impress the new signing and, two, to fight for your place.
"We haven't done that (made an early signing) in the last two or three years and this one is obviously a big boost for everyone."
Naismith will link up with former Ibrox team-mate Nikica Jelavic having been persuaded to move to Goodison Park by Everton boss and compatriot David Moyes.
The versatile 25-year-old has already joined up with his new team-mates in their Austrian training camp, and Neville believes the club has made a wise move.
"In the first couple of days I've seen him and spoken with him, he's got a hunger to succeed and it's great when you hear that he really wanted to come to Everton," added Neville.
"I think he saw the quality of the team and the quality of the manager and he wanted to be a part of it. He's settling in fine."
