Phil Bardsley believes Sunderland can push for European qualification this season if they make further signings during the transfer window.
Martin O'Neill is preparing for his first full season in charge at the Stadium of Light and hopes are high that the Black Cats can build on what they achieved during the second half of last term.
Carlos Cuellar has already been recruited on a free transfer following the expiry of his Aston Villa contract, and Bardsley is confident of finishing in the top ten at the very least.
The 27-year-old defender thinks Sunderland can even set their sights a little higher, especially if more players arrive to increase competition in the squad.
"Carlos Cuellar has come in and bolstered the squad so it is great news for us and hopefully there are a few more faces on the way to help us head in the direction we want to go in this season," Bardsley told
Sky Sports News.
Asked about the team's targets for the season, he added: "Obviously finishing in the top ten and pushing for Europe, with the quality of players we have got in the squad and if we make additions, that should be our aim.
"It is up to the players now to knuckle down in pre-season, work as hard as we can and be fresh for the start."
