Reading boss Brian McDermott has said that he is delighted with the signing of left-back Nicky Shorey, who has re-joined the club where he had previously notched up 286 appearances.
Shorey, who has two England caps, left Reading in 2008 to join Aston Villa, before joining West Brom in 2010. He played 53 games for the Baggies before leaving them at the end of his contract.
McDermott described the deal as a "no-brainer" and said that Shorey will provide competition for the club's first season back in the Premier League.
The 31-year-old, who was voted Reading's best-ever left-back by the club's fans, has signed a one-year deal with the Royals, with the option of a second year.
"I know him really well and have done over many, many years," McDermott told the club's official website.
"It's a deal I've been thinking about trying to do for a long time.
"He played for us in the Premier League, got us up from the Championship and also played 26 games in the Premier League last year.
"He's a free transfer, so I looked at the value involved in the deal and what he could bring to us - in the end it was an absolute no-brainer to do it.
"It gives competition in that position, which is what we felt we needed."
