The 26-year-old is a free agent after leaving Cardiff City at the end of last season.
He had agreed terms with Watford over a move to Vicarage Road before the club's Italian takeover, which led to the deal falling through.
The former Manchester United man has attracted interest from a number of Premier League and Championship clubs.
And it is understood the Robins have opened talks with Heaton after he spent the last few days with the club in Spain.
Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton and Blackburn are also rumoured to be keeping tabs on his situation.
