Peterborough United's summer signing Nathaniel Mendez-Laing is optimistic going into the new campaign, despite the club being one of the favourites to be relegated.
Mendez-Laing returned to the Championship outfit on a permanent basis earlier this summer following an impressive loan spell the season before last.
The 20-year-old has no intention of allowing Peterborough to drop back into League One after helping Darren Ferguson's side to achieve promotion in 2011.
"They were safe with games to spare last season, so they did very well and hopefully we will do just as well, if not better, this time round," Mendez-Laing told Sky Sports.
"Peterborough are a small club compared to a lot of Championship sides, but there is a lot of ambition here and I'm confident that we can avoid relegation again this year."
Mendez-Laing almost joined Posh last summer, but instead made the loan switch to Sheffield United where an injury-ravaged campaign saw him make just 11 appearances for the Blades.
He added: "I managed to sort out one injury and then the day that I returned to Sheffield I picked up another one, so it was a bit of bad luck.
"You can't help things like that, but hopefully I'll be able to stay well clear of injuries from now on and play a lot more football."
