Roberto Martinez believes he has added enough quality to his Wigan squad over the summer to avoid another nailbiting Premier League relegation scrap.
Wigan have been notoriously slow starters in recent seasons before finally finding form at just the right time to escape the drop.
The Latics needed seven wins out of their final nine league games last term, including impressive triumphs over Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle, to climb away from the drop-zone.
However, Martinez has refused to set his team any targets for the new season - other than preserving their top-flight status.
"The ultimate aim for us is to carry on in this league," he said. "Eight seasons in this league is a dream and August for us is a more significant month because we need to start stronger."
The Spaniard has made four close-season signings in a bid to make a stronger start to the forthcoming campaign, which Wigan begin with Sunday's home match against Chelsea.
Real Mallorca defender Ivan Ramis, 27, and Levante striker Arouna Kone, 28, both bring experience, while Martinez has also added teenage duo Fraser Fyvie and Ryo Miyaichi to his squad.
"All the players bring in something different for different roles," said the Latics boss.
"We have youngsters with potential, such as Fraser Fyvie from Aberdeen who is improving every day. You see him in training and he is a complete midfielder.
"Then we have Ryo Miyaichi who has exceptional talent in the wide areas, he is someone we have admired for a long time. He comes from a club with a great football philosophy and we are grateful to Arsenal for letting him come on loan."
On Ramis and Kone, he added: "We have two strong additions in terms of the age they come in. Ivan Ramis has been a captain at Mallorca and brings something different to the back line, then Arouna Kone is in the best moment of his career.
"He gives us an extra dimension up front, his goalscoring record was outstanding last season, he has been involved in different projects and leagues.
"Also, in many ways, to be able to keep the core of players we had, has been the biggest signings of the summer."
