Stewart Downing is willing to play out of position if that means staying in the reckoning at Liverpool.
The former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough player featured at left-back against Hearts in the Europa League, rather than in his usual station on the wing.
Downing had a disappointing first season at Anfield but seems willing to play in defence for new manager Brendan Rodgers,
who has spoken of his intention to play Downing in defence.
Test
"It was a good test and the manager probably wanted that for me," said the 28-year-old. "I enjoyed it up and down. It was hard work but it was good.
"I have said to him if he wants me to play at left-back or on the wing I am not bothered.
"As long as I play and do well, and the team do well, that is the main thing. It is a squad game. You are going to use everyone and if I am needed at left-back I am happy to do that."
Should Downing resume his duties further up the pitch, one possible outlet for him will not be there, with
the completion of Andy Carroll's loan move to West Ham.
Disappointed
"I'm disappointed obviously, but it is up to Andy what he does with his future," Downing added.
"If that is to go to West Ham then I wish him all the best. He is a good lad.
"Obviously he has found it tough but I am sure he will do well for them, he is a good player. I think that is a good signing for West Ham."
Downing does not expect to be leaving Liverpool and is happy to battle for his place in the side.
He said: "I am happy here, I want to stay here. I am fighting to get back into the team and hopefully if I keep playing well I will get back in."
