Despite scoring whilst on loan at Leicester, Watford and Wigan, the England midfielder's goal against Newcastle in the Capital One Cup was his first for United in his nineteenth competitive appearance.
Cleverley gave his side a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford, stroking Danny Welbeck's pass into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. After missing an easier opportunity in the first half, he was thankful to get a second opportunity.
After the game the midfielder, who recently made his first international appearances against Moldova and Ukraine, admitted that he had had concerns at his lack of goals.
"It has been playing on my mind a little bit," said Cleverley.
"I have always scored goals when I have gone on loan, so it was bugging me that I had not been doing it for my club or country.
"We practice those sort of finishes a lot, so when the ball came to me I knew what I was going to do.
"I have got the first one out of the way now. Hopefully they will all come at once."
Cleverley will hope to gain a place in Roy Hodgson's next squad for games against San Marino and Poland.
