Villa, who have taken five points from their opening eight games suffered their fourth defeat on their Premier League travels to extend their winless run to 13 on the road.
The visitors had a chance to rescue a point in the dying minutes of the match but Christian Benteke missed a sitter from close-range.
The Scot told Sky Sports: "I thought it was a really close game and I thought we done really fine but you cannot concede from a set-piece.
"Some of our play was very good, very good and I didn't think there was too much in the game at all.
"I'm not going to be too down beat. Obviously it's disappointing to lose, but we have to keep going. I think they (the players) know themselves they're playing well at the moment. You don't give up and we'll be fine."
Asked what was behind his thinking in leaving an in-form Christian Benteke on the bench and favouring Darren Bent instead, Lambert said: "Christian has played two games for Belgium during the week and I thought about playing Gabs (Gabby Agbonlahor) and Darren. I happen to think they did really fine."
And Lambert is positive that his youngster stars are improving with each game and believes the club's away form will eventually come good.
He added: "It's not for the lack of trying. In the time I've been here, we give it every go. I didn't think there was much in that game today."
