The Grecians' impressive midweek 3-2 win at league leaders Gillingham saw the club reclaim a play-off berth in their quest to bounce back at the first attempt following relegation from League One six months ago.
However, former Colchester centre-half Baldwin concedes that there is still a lot of work to be done before Exeter can dream of an instant return to the third tier.
"All the players and management want to be ambitious, but on the other hand you have to be realistic as well," Baldwin told Sky Sports.
"From a financial point of view we shouldn't expect to go up this year due to the financial constraints on the club.
"A lot of people need to realise that, including the fans, because obviously they are used to success here and now the playing fields have changed somewhat with a lot of money being spent at this level.
"We certainly have no divine right to go straight back up into League One, but that is the aim that we all strive for."
