Gilbey, who is in the final year of his contract at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, is regarded as one of the best young prospects at the club and Colchester were keen to tie him down to a new long-term deal.
However, the 18-year-old has rejected Colchester's initial offer and the news is sure to alert a host of his admirers.
Sky Sports understands a number of Championship clubs are tracking Gilbey after catching the eye for Colchester so far this season and also impressing during a successful loan spell at Newport County last season.
Colchester boss Joe Dunne has confirmed Gilbey has turned down the club's contract offer and that he has no issue with the teenager's decision.
"We've offered Alex a deal and his representatives have turned it down," Dunne told the Colchester Gazette.
"It's not a concern - they have to do what's best for them and we as a club have to do what's best for us.
"We've offered what we think is right, in terms of our structure and we think it's fair.
"But we also appreciate that in the modern climate, you have to do what's best for yourself.
"It's certainly not something that has affected Alex or his football, nor our relationship.
"We'll wait and see what happens but Alex is someone who I've known for a long time now and I gave him his debut."
