Caulker, who spent the 2011/12 season on loan at Swansea, headed home Bellamy's 62nd-minute corner to hand Cardiff the points in the first Premier League meeting between the clubs.
Cardiff-born Bellamy was delighted with a first home win since August and outlined the importance of Malky Mackay's side picking up three points.
"It's a big win," Bellamy told Sky Sports. "It's the third south Wales derby I've played in and every single one has been decided by one goal.
"It's always a hard-fought game and today was no exception.
"As well as it being a derby, it's a big three points for us as we really needed it. Next month we've got some really tough fixtures ahead of us.
"It was a home game and we knew it was very important, not just with it being the south Wales derby, but we needed three points as well."
Match-winner Caulker, who joined Cardiff from Tottenham in the summer, offered a muted celebration to his goal out of respect for his former club.
The defender said: "It was really intense, especially the last 10 minutes when we were sort of clinging on, but the boys have done really well and stuck together.
"It was a different experience playing against them today. I enjoyed my time there, but I'm a Bluebird.
"I was thankful to get the win for us, and even more pleased to get the goal. I always respect the teams I've played for. They took me in a couple of years ago, so there's no hard feelings."
