With Peterborough United prepared to part with the Congo international in January, he had a number of options to weigh up.
Staying in England would have been the safe choice, with a number of the Posh's third tier rivals prepared to take him on loan, but Zakuani decided to step into the unknown.
He has linked up with Kalloni on an initial six-month deal, but the 27-year-old defender admits he would be prepared to discuss fresh terms if they are put to him.
Zakuani, who has also turned out for Leyton Orient, Fulham and Stoke City, told the Daily Telegraph: "It was completely out of the blue.
"They came to watch the Preston game because they kept going on about my battle with Kevin Davies.
"I had a few loan offers from League 1 clubs but I had three or four Greek clubs come in for me. It was quite strange to be honest.
"They wanted me to sign for 18 months, but because I'd never played outside England I couldn't really commit.
"I thought six months was perfect for me, but at the moment I've not seen a downside because it's been going perfectly on the pitch."
