Who had the better Premier League head-to-head record out of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard? We pick out some of the key stats...

Jose Mourinho dreamed of pairing them together at Chelsea in a 4-5-1, while England spent years debating how to play them together in a 4-4-2.

But this weekend Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are set to renew a familiar battle as they find themselves on opposite sides once again.

The rivalry between the Premier League's two top-scoring midfielders moves to Major League Soccer on Sunday evening when Gerrard's Los Angeles Galaxy host Lampard's New York City.

But who will get the better of the other Stateside? The lessons of history are all there in the Premier League stats as we take a look at who has fared best in their matches over the years…

Who has the winning record against the other?

Lampard has 10 Premier League wins in their 20 games against each other with Gerrard's Liverpool winning seven drawing three. Surprisingly, that's not just down to Chelsea's record against the Reds. Lampard emerged victorious the first time the two men faced each other in the Premier League as West Ham beat Liverpool 1-0 at Upton Park in November 1999 thanks to a Trevor Sinclair goal.

Who has the better goalscoring record against the other?

Gerrard and Lampard amassed almost 300 Premier League goals between them in their careers but that didn't translate into too many goals against each other. In fact, Gerrard scored only one goal against Lampard – and that was in a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in 2005, a game in which his England team-mate opened the scoring from the spot.

Lampard went on to score two further goals against Gerrard in the Premier League, both of them coming at Anfield. The first was a 2007 penalty that salvaged a point and his most recent goal against him came in 2010 when he doubled Chelsea's lead to take them to the brink of the Premier League title under Carlo Ancelotti.

Who comes out on top for assists in games against the other?

Despite both players being capable of expert delivery from set-piece situations and having an eye for a pass, Gerrard and Lampard have managed just three assists in the 20 games in which they have both featured. Despite Liverpool being outscored 24 to 16 in those matches, it's Gerrard who has out-assisted Lampard by two to one.

Unfortunately, it's an 'assist' of another type in the most recent meeting between the two players – Gerrard's slip to allow Demba Ba to run through to score in 2014 – which the then Liverpool captain is likely to remember most clearly. Sunday night and over 5,000 miles away from Anfield, Gerrard has the chance to exact a little bit of revenge…
