Arsenal signed fewer players than any other professional club in England during the summer transfer window.

Petr Cech was Arsene Wenger's only first-team addition this summer - every club in the country added at least four players to their ranks.

In contrast, League Two Notts County and League One Wigan signed the most players, with a remarkable 21 new arrivals, while QPR (20), Newport County and Yeovil Town (19 each) were also busy.

Watford were the most active Premier League club, signing 17 new players, followed by Chelsea (15). This figure includes loan signings and youth team players who have signed professional contracts.

Chelsea also saw the largest number of departures this summer - 38 players left the club either permanently or on loan.

That's a sharp contrast to newly promoted League One side Bury who saw just four players move on during the window.

Big spenders

When it comes to spending, Manchester City top the table, following Manuel Pellegrini's £158.9m spending spree on the likes of Kevin De Bruyne (£54.5m) and Raheem Sterling (£49m).

However, City also sold £44.5m of talent, with almost half of that total coming from Alvaro Negredo's £21.3m transfer to Valencia.

Meanwhile, Manchester United splashed £129.8m on new signings - £59.4m on midfield trio Memphis Depay (£27.9m), Morgan Schneiderlin (£25m) and Bastian Schweinsteiger (£6.5m). The Red Devils saved their biggest deal for last - £57.6m on 19-year-old Monaco striker Anthony Martial.

United recouped £75.3m from selling players, though, including the £44.3m fee they received from PSG for Angel Di Maria.

Liverpool were England's third-biggest spenders with £78.4m, primarily on striker Christian Benteke (£32.5m), with Chelsea (£68m), Aston Villa (£54.3m) and Tottenham (£49.3m) also active in the window.

Watching the pounds

In contrast, Swansea spent the least of Premier League clubs, with just £9.7m in transfer fees.

Bournemouth were the only Premier League club not to recover any funds from selling players during the transfer window.

League totals

In total, Premier League clubs spent £907.2m on players and sold £427.8m, while Championship teams spent £95.7m and recouped £98.6m.

League One clubs spent £2.3m and sold £9.2m, while League Two sides spent £98,000, but sold players for over £1.38m.

Outside the Premier League

Derby County were the Championship's biggest spenders, splashing £16.9m, followed by Burnley (£15.4m) and Middlesbrough (£13.9m).

Hull City were the league's biggest sellers with £24.6m received in fees, followed by Brentford (£14.5m) and Blackburn Rovers (£8.9m).

In League One, Wigan were the runaway big spenders, paying out £2m for defender Reece James and striker Will Grigg - but the Latics earned £3.5m in sales.

Swindon Town sold the highest value of players - receiving £3.5m for midfield duo Massimo Luongo (£3m) and Ben Gladwin (£500,000).

Luton Town were League Two's only spenders, investing £98,000 on midfielder Cameron McGeehan. Meanwhile, Northampton Town's coffers were bolstered by the £500,000 sale of striker Ivan Toney.
