Best of CL

We look at the best and worst moments from the opening round of the UEFA Champions League.

Team of the week

Game of the week

Barcelona's visit of AC Milan was an entertaining, nailbiting affair, capped by a dramatic last-gasp equaliser to seal the 2-2 draw. The Rossoneri made the liveliest of starts, catching Barca off-guard with just 30 seconds on the clock when Brazilian forward Pato struck home to put the visitors ahead. Pedro pulled the hosts level before the break with a close-range strike before David Villa's superb free-kick saw the Catalan giants take the lead in the 50th minute. But just when Barca thought they had the three points in the bag there was late drama as Thiago Silva out-jumped two defenders to nod home a Clarence Seedorf corner at the death and earn a share of the spoils for the Italians.

Player of the week

If Villarreal thought the absence of injured Dutch ace Arjen Robben would blunt the attacking force of Bayern Munich they were sadly mistaken, with Franck Ribery more than making up for his non-appearance. Ribery was a constant tormentor of the home side's defence, running riot down the left wing with support from Philipp Lahm in a remarkable shift at El Madrigal. The French winger could not cap his display with a goal but was the creative force behind Toni Kroos' seventh-minute opener, expertly planting the ball in the box and allowing his young team-mate to bury it.

Goal of the week

Barcelona ace David Villa's sublime free-kick against AC Milan was a joy to watch, with the Spain international coolly lifting the ball into the top corner from almost 30 yards out. Also deserving of a mention is Trabzonspor defender Ondrej Celustka, who pounced on a rebounded shot from Halil Altintop after it hit the crossbar against Inter Milan. Celustka scooped up the loose ball, turned and tucked it decisively into the bottom right-hand corner for what turned out to be the game winner.

Gaffe of the week

Roberto Mancini admitted in his post-match interview that he had warned his Manchester City players of Napoli's potency on the counter-attack, but his pep talk had apparently eluded Gareth Barry, whose careless error in the 69th minute led to the Italian side's goal. The England international attempted an unfathomable backheel just outside the Napoli penalty area to gift the ball to Christian Maggio, then could only watch helplessly as the Italian raced 50 yards downfield to set up Edison Cavani's goal.

Save of the week

Manchester United's reserve keeper Anders Lindegaard could do nothing to block Oscar Cardozo's opener at Benfica but the Dane pulled off two crucial saves in quick succession in the second half to make his performance one to remember. Lindegaard first got down low to palm away Nolito's goal-bound effort in the 66th minute, but it was his stop against Nicolas Gaitan 10 minutes later that really caught the eye. The Argentinian's curling shot looked destined for the top left-hand corner but Lindegaard jumped at full stretch and somehow managed to claw it away. The keeper has made no secret of the fact he is prepared to fight summer signing David de Gea for the No.1 jersey at Old Trafford and his display in Portugal will have done nothing to harm his chances.

Surprise of the week

Three-time European champions Inter Milan must have been rubbing their hands with glee when they were drawn against Turkish minnows Trabzonspor in their opener, but little did they know they were in for a major upset. The Turks, visiting the San Siro for the first time, managed to hold off the Nerazzuri attack, largely thanks to a string of fine saves from goalkeeper Tolga Zengin. Ondrej Celustka was then the hero of the evening for Trabzonspor when he slid home the only goal of the encounter in the 76th minute, sealing a shock 1-0 win.
