Monaco have labelled reports they made an approach for under-pressure Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho as an "unsubstantiated rumour".

According to widespread newspaper reports on Wednesday, Monaco shareholder Alessandro Proto is said to have claimed he met with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich in London in an attempt to buy Mourinho out of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

The French side, however, have dismissed this claim.

"AS Monaco would invite the media to not repeat extravagant and unsubstantiated rumours from a supposedly minority shareholder," the club confirmed via its official Twitter account.

Mourinho is currently facing an uncertain future at Chelsea, having led the club to their worst start to a season in 37 years.

Mourinho was defiant in his latest press conference, saying he's in a stable and strong position to deal with the pressure on him

The pressure on the Portuguese intensified last weekend following the 3-1 home defeat to Liverpool, which condemned Chelsea to their ninth loss in 17 matches this season.

Ahead of Chelsea's Champions League home clash with Dynamo Kiev on Wednesday, a defiant Mourinho insisted he would see out his contract with the club, which expires in the summer of 2019.
