Bayer Leverkusen striker Javier Hernandez has defended Louis van Gaal's decision to let him leave Manchester United.

Having been a key figure during Sir Alex Ferguson's final years at Old Trafford, Hernandez's influence gradually diminished under David Moyes and Van Gaal.

The Mexico international was shipped out on loan to Real Madrid last season before his five-year spell with United was finally brought to an end when he was sold to Leverkusen.

Chicharito has since rediscovered his goalscoring form, netting 19 goals in 22 appearances for the Bundesliga club - winning consecutive Player of the Month awards in the process.

United's recent troubles in front of goal have seen Hernandez's stock rise, with some fans criticising Van Gaal's decision to let him go.

Rudi Voller insists Javier Hernandez will not be sold by Bayer Leverkusen.

And, speaking to German sports daily Bild, Hernandez was flattered some United fans wanted him to stay but insisted his Old Trafford exit was not caused by personal issues with Van Gaal.

"It's part of the game," the 27-year-old said. "Only 11 players can start. It was nothing personal but every coach has his own plan.

"When people criticise Van Gaal, that's their opinion. I'm pleased that people think I could have stayed there longer.

"I had four great years in Manchester. I was champion twice."
