Sheffield Wednesday have taken winger Aiden McGeady on loan from Everton until the end of the season.

The 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international has made just one appearance for the Toffees this season and is keen for regular first-team football ahead of Euro 2016.

Blackburn and Leeds had already been linked with McGeady, who enjoyed the most successful period of his career while playing for Celtic.

While in Glasgow he won four Scottish Premier League titles, and a brace of winners' medals in both the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.

He then moved to Spartak Moscow for £9.5m in 2010 and scored 13 goals in 93 appearances for the Russian side.

He returned to the UK with Everton for an undisclosed fee in January 2014 but has failed to become a first-team regular at Goodison Park.

McGeady, who made his international debut in 2004, has 79 caps and is keen to be part of their squad at Euro 2016 this summer.

Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal said: "I'm very happy because first of all, we only want to bring in players if they can improve the team.

"He is a player that adds extra quality and a player I know very, very well because when he played at Celtic, I was coach of Sporting and I tried to bring him to the club but it was not possible at that moment.

"I am happy because he is a player that can improve the team and he will help us in the second part of the season."

Meanwhile, striker Conor McAleny has joined Wigan on loan from Everton until the end of the season.
