Alex Neil says the games in the Premier League are only getting tougher as teams battle for important points at both ends of the table

Patrick Bamford is set to make his Norwich debut against Aston Villa after being named in manager Alex Neil's matchday squad.

The on-loan Chelsea striker joined the Canaries during the January transfer window until the end of the season after having a season-long loan deal at Crystal Palace cut short, but did not make the squad for Tuesday's 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham.

Neil said: "He's in the squad. He gives us something different as a left-footer, which we don't have, and his movement off the ball is very good as is his finishing.

"I spoke to him in the summer, off the back of a really good Championship season, and discussed the prospect of him joining us, but he decided to join Crystal Palace.

"But when that came to an end, we reignited it and luckily he's here now. I think every player has something to prove, regardless of their history, not just him."

Neil admits he was pleased with his January transfer business, with further signings including Steven Naismith from Everton, Timm KloseIvo PintoMatt Jarvis, Ben Godfrey, Ebou Adams and James Maddison.

Neil says the club were in a difficult position in terms of recruitment last summer but they have positioned themselves better in the transfer market since, and are reaping the rewards.

He said: "We're in a better position off the pitch now than we were this summer, in terms of our relationships with clubs, and we're in a better position to bring in the quality we need.

"We need to start putting more points on the board and there is confidence there. We haven't been in the bottom three for a long time; I think we've been in there once this season."
