Ross Barkley will miss the start of the season after having an operation on his damaged groin.

Barkley had surgery on Tuesday on the injury which kept him out of Everton's pre-season trips to Tanzania and the Netherlands.

And Everton expect their England midfielder to miss four weeks, ruling him out of the opening Premier League game against Stoke and the club's upcoming Europa League qualifier.

Barkley is in the final year of his deal and wants to leave Goodison Park this summer, but Tottenham have so far failed to match Everton's valuation.
