Christian Benteke suffered ligament damage in Crystal Palace's 5-0 defeat to Manchester City, according to manager Roy Hodgson.

The Belgian international was replaced by Bakary Sako in the 72nd minute after complaining about a knee problem.

Palace boss Hodgson confirmed the injury was a form of ligament damage, which will leave him out of the team's game against Manchester United at Old Trafford next Saturday.

"Not well, we think it's a form of ligament damage," Hodgson said when asked about Benteke's injury in his post-match press conference.

"But I don't know quite how bad that ligament damage is. He's going to have a scan tomorrow [Sunday].

"It will mean he will not be playing in the next game - I can be sure of that - which we could do without at this time."

Benteke, who scored 17 goals in all competitions for Crystal Palace last season, is one of three recognised strikers in the Eagles' squad - alongside Connor Wickham and Freddie Ladapo.

Former Sunderland forward Wickham remains on the Palace sidelines, nearly 10 months after his last start against Swansea last November, while Ladapo has yet to play a Premier League game.

Manchester City's victory leaves Hodgson's side bottom of the table without a win or goal from their opening six games.
