Portsmouth have announced that Middlesbrough have turned down their £4.5million attempt to bring Gary O'Neil back to Fratton Park.
The midfielder left the South Coast outfit for The Riverside in August 2007 after a positive spell with Pompey and almost 200 appearances.
Portsmouth manager Tony Adams is keen to fine tune the squad he inherited from Harry Redknapp and former England Under 21 international O'Neil has been targeted.
However, Pompey executive chairman Peter Storrie has revealed that Boro - who have also rejected interest from Tottenham in Stewart Downing - have snubbed their approach.
"We made what we thought to be a good offer for Gary but unfortunately it was declined and we will not be increasing our bid," Storrie told Pompey's official website.
"Gary is a player that Tony and the team know well having been here since he was a youngster.
"He would have been a good addition to the squad."
