Sheffield United have confirmed Stoke City have made an enquiry for James Beattie, but insist no deal has been agreed.
Beattie has been linked with a £2.5million move to Stoke as the Premier League strugglers look to improve their squad.
Blades boss Kevin Blackwell has acknowledged that the Potters have asked about signing the former England international.
And Blackwell says he will leave a decision in the board's hands regarding whether Beattie leaves Bramall Lane during the transfer window.
Up to board
Blackwell told the Sheffield Star: "I can confirm that Stoke have made an enquiry.
"I have left it with my board of directors and it is up to them to decide what to do from here.
"As far as I'm concerned James is still a United player and that is how it will stay until I'm told otherwise."
Furthermore, chairman Kevin McCabe insisted no fee had been agreed for the former Everton and Southampton forward, with Stoke tipped to continue their chase.
"No deal has been struck," McCabe said. "And if movement of players does occur, particularly involving those you do not want to go, then it would only be done to strengthen, not weaken the club.
"We will ensure that, as always, everything we do is in our best interests."
