Mark Hughes has confirmed he is hoping to add Hamburg midfielder Nigel De Jong to his Manchester City squad.
Hamburg revealed last week that a bid had been received from City, with De Jong now weighing up a move to the Premier League.
The Holland international admitted over the weekend that he would be tempted by the prospect of joining City, with reports claiming an £18million deal could be sealed within the next 48 hours.
And Hughes, who is continuing to pursue a world-record bid for AC Milan schemer Kaka, acknowledged his interest in signing De Jong.
"He is a player I like and who would help us if we can bring him here," said Hughes in the Manchester Evening News.
Hamburg coach Martin Jol has admitted that he is prepared for his fellow Dutchman to leave the Bundesliga club this month.
Jol told Die Welt: "I can accept the transfer of Nigel."
He added on the club's official website: "It is nothing new for me as a coach, so it does not affect our daily tasks."
If De Jong is sold, then Jol is likely to use the money to bring in a replacement, although Lorik Cana, Christian Poulsen and Mark van Bommel are no longer reported to be targets for Hamburg.
