Middlesbrough look poised to be ready to let Mido join Wigan in exchange for Marlon King, skysports.com understands.
It is thought the two clubs are hoping to strike a loan deal, although they are both open to permanent moves.
Mido has long been unsettled on Teesside and his failure to win a regular starting place under Gareth Southgate has only added to his keenness to leave.
He has rejected speculation linking him with a move to Turkey and now long-term admirer Steve Bruce looks set to finally get his man.
Bruce would sanction the deal as he is able to send King in the opposite direction.
King has been on loan at Hull City - but he clashed with manager Phil Brown at the weekend and now looks unlikely to have any sort of future at the KC Stadium.
With none or little money to spend, Boro could likely not afford to buy King anyway, but the chance to swap him with Mido is likely to appeal to Southgate.
Southgate has already tried to swap the Egyptian for Newcastle's Alan Smith and Marlon Harewood of Aston Villa, but neither deal has materialised.
Now a move for King could be the ideal scenario for both clubs, if as expected he is sent back to the JJB Stadium.
