Sam Allardyce has called on Roque Santa Cruz to focus on keeping Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League after the striker failed to secure a move to Manchester City.
Former Rovers boss Mark Hughes made numerous attempts to take Santa Cruz to City during the January transfer window, with the Paraguayan reportedly keen on a deal.
Blackburn rejected all offers for Santa Cruz, although Allardyce concedes the club could have sold the ex-Bayern Munich forward if Rovers had been in mid-table.
But, with Rovers in the relegation zone and a point from safety, Allardyce has urged the likes of Santa Cruz to quickly overcome their transfer disappointment.
"Had we been in a safer position, we would have considered selling Roque," admitted the Blackburn boss.
"But Premier League status brings such great rewards we just could not put that at risk by selling any of our best players.
"Those players who got us into this mess need to get us out of it.
"Those players that were involved in transfer speculation last month need to get over their disappointment quickly.
"They are still contracted to Blackburn Rovers. Their job now is to focus on the job at hand, which is all about keeping the club in the Premier League.
"If this club is relegated, the whole of the staff would have to be cut back. There is a responsibility on myself and the players to stop that happening.
"People who have worked here for a long time might be told they don't have a job any more and that would be terrible for everybody.
"Relegation means redundancies and that's not what I came here for."
