New signing Ryan Taylor admits it's hard to envisage Newcastle United as relegation candidates.
But the former Wigan man is aware that their perilous position just one point above the drop-zone means United must start winning games - starting at bottom club West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
"I have only trained twice and you see the quality here and it is frightening, really. But then you look at the league table and the league table doesn't lie," said Taylor.
"The club has been a bit unlucky with big players missing throughout the season. But we need to get a couple of wins under our belt.
"You don't see Newcastle as a team that could be relegated, but everyone is in it.
"There are 10 teams in it but with the quality we have got at this club, we shouldn't really be in the position we are."
Taylor joined the Magpies as part of the deal that took Charles N'Zogbia to Wigan and is looking to play his part in hauling Newcastle away from danger.
He added: "We are going to West Brom on Saturday and there are a couple of players back from injury, and then there's the likes of me, Kevin (Nolan) and Peter Lovenkrands, and hopefully that will give the lads a little boost.
"Sometimes it's what you need, to freshen up the squad a little bit, and hopefully we can come away with a win on Saturday."
Newcastle face a tough run of home fixtures against Everton, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea and so need something at The Hawthorns to ease their passage towards manager Joe Kinnear's survival target.
Kinnear said: "Every game we play in is a must-win. Any game I go into, I want to win.
"I want to get as soon as I possibly can to 38 points. I think 38 points will be enough, so obviously, we need another 14."
