Sylvain Distin believes Portsmouth were right to hand Paul Hart the reins until the end of the season.
Hart, along with fellow coach Brian Kidd, will oversee managerial matters at Fratton Park for the remainder of the campaign after initially taking charge on a caretaker basis following Tony Adams' dismissal.
Performances have seen a marked improvement since their arrival, with four points taken from three games so far.
The South Coast club continue to languish perilously close to the relegation zone despite that run, but Distin believes Hart and Kidd are the ideal candidates to steer the side to safety.
He told
The News: "It is a positive move and a good decision because it would have been silly to change it again.
"That would have left us with four or five managers for the season - that is not good for the team.
"Paul and Brian have come in and done a great job. We are a bit more organised but I think we had a bit of a mental problem as much as anything because the players and the team were the same.
Responsible
"So we all feel responsible for what happened to Tony and maybe we have a point to prove.
"As a player you feel responsible for Tony being sacked but also the new staff coming in have made us work a different way and it's working.
"If we can keep playing the way we have in the last three games I see no reason why we cannot get out of this situation."
He added: "Staying up is important for the fans, for the players and for the club. I do not see any positive points about going down, especially considering the season we had last year.
"We won the FA Cup and were challenging for a European place - then we lost two of our best players and two managers.
"It's not the best thing to happen because we were expecting more and that is disappointing.
"But that is football and things can change so quickly. It is a different kind of battle this time around."
