Shearer hopes for Jonas boost

Newcastle boss Alan Shearer hopes Jonas Gutierrez's ankle problem does not flare up again.

Magpies winger still struggling with ankle problem

Newcastle boss Alan Shearer hopes Jonas Gutierrez's ankle problem does not flare up again. The Argentina international has been carrying a knock for some time and was only deemed fit enough for a place on the bench as the Magpies drew 0-0 with Portsmouth on Monday. He did enter the fray as a 71st minute substitute during the Pompey clash, but looked far from his buccaneering best. Gutierrez then sloped off at the end of the game looking far from happy and Shearer has confirmed that an old injury is still giving him grief. "Jonas had a knock on an ankle injury. He had been away for two days (prior to the Pompey game)," Shearer told the Evening Chronicle. "He was all right to put on the bench, so we will see how is."

Meanwhile, Jose Enrique's season appears to have been brought to a premature end with the news that he has picked up a hamstring strain. The Spaniard made his long-awaited return from injury against Portsmouth, but lasted just 20 minutes against Paul Hart's side. "It was his hamstring, so a different injury to the one he had," added Shearer. "How bad? We don't know. "He will undergo a scan, but my experience of hamstrings tells me he is unlikely to be fit for the weekend (trip to Liverpool)."
