Shaun Wright-Phillips is set to be fit for Manchester City's game with Blackburn Rovers, but faces a battle to dislodge Elano from the team.
England winger Wright-Phillips has missed City's last four matches due to an ankle injury, but is now back in training.
Elano has deputised for his team-mate in the previous three fixtures and the Brazilian is expected to shake off a minor knock to be available for the visit of Blackburn.
And City boss Mark Hughes admits the form of Elano means he faces a tricky decision over recalling Wright-Phillips for the meeting with his former club.
"Elano was fit to train again on Tuesday," Hughes told the club's official website. "Shaun did some field-based work on Monday and we need to see how he is, but we are hopeful that he will be an option.
"It's a case of seeing if there is any reaction to anything that he has done. Pablo Zabaleta is looking positive, but Blackburn looks like it might be a game too soon for him.
"Ela's done very well on that right-hand side - it's a role he knows well from playing many times there for Brazil, so there's an understanding of the role.
"But there is also a willingness to work hard and track back. He was at left-back at one point, he has been criticised at times, but he works hard for the team.
"When everyone is fit and well, I feel the squad is a lot stronger than it was at the start of the season. We have also got the benefit now of the hard work we have put in all year, and we want to finish on a high."
