Fulham have chosen not to sign Derby youngster Giles Barnes on a permanent deal.
The 21-year-old joined the Cottagers on loan in January but has not made a single appearance for his new side due to an Achilles injury.
Fulham boss Roy Hodgson admits he cannot afford to splash out on a player that he has not had the chance to evaluate properly.
"Giles has unfortunately been injured and we haven't had the chance to assess him as we would like," Hodgson told the Sunday Mirror.
"We would not be prepared to pay the amount of money that we would be required to pay at the end of the loan to acquire his services."
Hodgson also confirmed that fellow loan signing Olivier Dacourt will depart the club at the end of the season.
The Inter Milan midfielder came to Craven Cottage on a temporary deal in February and has made eight Premier League appearances as a substitute.
But Hodgson believes that the Frenchman is thinking about announcing his retirement during the summer.
"Olivier came here making it clear he would be here only until the end of the season," the 61-year-old manger added.
"I think he's contemplating retirement now, although I'd hope that's not the case as I think he's got a lot more to offer - although it wouldn't be in England due to his family situation."
