New QPR snub for Barton

Midfielder left without a squad number for the new season

The future of Joey Barton at Queens Park Rangers remains uncertain after he was left without a squad number for the new season. Midfielder Barton's old number 17 shirt has been given to summer signing Ryan Nelsen, who joined from Tottenham Hotspur. Barton must serve a 12-game ban to start the season after his red card and violent conduct in the final match of the last campaign against former club Manchester City. Summer speculation that the 29-year-old, who was also stripped of QPR's captaincy over the summer, would be sold or loaned out has so far come to nothing. But the new QPR squad list, announced on the club's official website, does little to suggest he has a future with the club. Barton said via his official Twitter account on Thursday evening: "Heard my shirt numbers gone to someone else. News to me... "Just come off the golf course so only just heard. A call would of been nice. Ah, well life goes on..." Goalkeeper Rob Green has been handed the No.1 shirt, former Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-Sung will wear No.7, with Adel Taarabt switching to 10.
