The 22-year-old goalkeeper has had to bide his time in his efforts to win a first-team place at the Madejski Stadium, with the last five seasons seeing him take in loan spells at eight different clubs.
His patience is now being rewarded, with Brian McDermott having offered McCarthy his Premier League break following an inconsistent start to the campaign by Adam Federici.
McCarthy is looking to make the most of his opportunity and put in an inspired display against Swansea on Saturday as the Royals hung on to claim a 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium.
"It was disappointing not to win, but I was pleased with the way things went for me," said McCarthy, who saw Reading throw away a two-goal lead.
His aim now is to hold down a regular role and force his way into Roy Hodgson's England plans.
"Obviously there are a lot of good English keepers out there," added McCarthy. "Joe Hart is an unbelievable keeper and he's been doing it for years.
"I will just keep doing my thing and see what happens. Hopefully I will get there one day."
