The North German outfit are looking at options for their vacant managerial role at the Weserstadion and general manager Thomas Eichin has confirmed that one person is in the frame as the 'ideal candidate'.
However, Eichin refused to reveal his identity with Freund strongly linked, along with fellow former Germany international Mehmet Scholl and former FC Basel boss Heiko Vogel.
Eichin told Kreiszeitung Syke: "I can confirm we have an ideal candidate for the vacancy.
"We now have the obligation to convince our target to be the right man to take over the job at our club. We have already been in touch and talks have begun.
"Our plan is to confirm the arrival in those next two to four weeks."
Asked whether it was Freund, he added: "I am not going to make comments on any of the names mentioned. I do not intend to discuss this."
Meanwhile, Eichin has played down reports Greece defender Sokratis Papasthatopoulos is on the verge of leaving Bremen for Bayer Leverkusen.
Leverkusen executive Wolfgang Holzhauser had told BILD the club were keen to secure the services of Papasthatopoulos, but Eichin insists they are yet to agree terms.
Eichin said: "I am definitely irritated about those statement from Bayer Leverkusen.
"We are far off in terms of negotiations. Sokratis Papasthatopoulos is under contract with our club until June 2016. The transfer bid should therefore be rather like a double-digit million Euro sum to see us consider this.
"We want to keep Sokratis, but there is interest in his services from many clubs. If there is a bid we have to consider as it's financially good enough, we would definitely take selling into consideration."
