Having studied footage of Beckham's technique on set-pieces and crosses, Ward-Prowse was proud to hear that Hull City boss Steve Bruce recently likened him to the former Manchester United man.
The 19-year-old has caught the eye with his performances for Southampton this season and is currently away with the England Under-21 squad on international duty.
Speaking about Bruce's comments, Ward-Prowse enthused: "I saw that and it is nice to be compared to someone like that.
"He is a boyhood hero of mine. He is someone I have modelled my attributes on - especially his free-kick taking and his set-piece delivery. I often stop after training with Rickie Lambert and practise."
While Ward-Prowse's fine form was rewarded with a call-up to Gareth Southgate's U21 squad, Southampton team-mates Lambert, Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez are currently away with Roy Hodgson's senior set-up.
Ward-Prowse says it is great news for the club that so many players are involved with their countries, and has credited Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino for instilling a strong sense of belief at St Mary's.
"It's a hell of a compliment for Southampton that those three have been called up, and it's not just those three but the others as well," said the teenager.
"You've got Dejan Lovren looking to qualify for the World Cup with Croatia and Gaston Ramirez with Uruguay too, so I think Southampton has become a club that is recognised worldwide and that everyone is striving to do well.
"Adam Lallana has been a massive role model for me at the club. When I was younger, he was a role model in terms of his path to the first team, his loyalty to the club and the way he came through.
"I think on a day-to-day basis in training, the way he applies himself and his love for the game is admirable for everyone."
Ward-Prowse added: "The manager has given everyone confidence and belief that we can win games no matter who's in front of us in the league or cup."
