Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew continues to 'monitor' Loic Remy's situation after a move to Liverpool broke down.

The France international was expected to complete an £8.5million move to Anfield from Queens Park Rangers, but saw the deal collapse after undergoing a medical.

QPR have been left baffled by the breakdown in talks, with Harry Redknapp of the opinion that Remy is fighting fit.

That is also the opinion of those at Newcastle who worked with the 27-year-old during a season-long loan spell in 2013/14.

Should the door be opened for Remy to return to St James' Park, Pardew hopes he will be ready to step in.

He is, however, aware that a man who netted 14 Premier League goals last season continues to generate interest from clubs across Europe.

Pardew said in the Evening Chronicle: "I am surprised about what's happening with Loic because I thought he was signing for Liverpool and that door was slammed shut.

"I didn't expect that, and we certainly had no problem with Loic during his time with us.

"So we shall monitor it as we go along."
