Jack Rodwell is at Sunderland's training ground as he nears a move to the North East on a five-year deal.

Jack Rodwell has arrived in Sunderland as Gus Poyet closes in on a deal for the Manchester City midfielder.

Sunderland have been in advanced talks for the England international and a fee of around £10m has been agreed between the two clubs on a five-year contract.

The 23-year-old made just 10 appearances for City last season having been hampered by a series of injuries since his arrival from Everton in a £12million move in the summer of 2012.

The arrival of Fernando from Porto has increased the competition for places in City's star-studded line-up.

The Southport-born player is keen for regular first-team football as he looks to kick-start his career and boost his chances of adding to his three England caps, the last of which came against Brazil in a friendly at the Maracana in June 2013.

Poyet's transfer business so far this summer has been of the low-key variety, with Jordi Gomez, Billy Jones and Costel Pantilimon signing on free transfers and Chelsea fringe player Patrick van Aarnholt also arriving.
