Mario Balotelli has joined AC Milan on a season-long loan, Liverpool have confirmed.

Balotelli has returned to the San Siro after enduring a frustrating first season at Liverpool where he managed just one goal in 16 Premier League appearances.

The former Inter Milan and Manchester City striker scored 26 goals in 46 games for the Rossoneri before making a £16m move to Liverpool last August.

Liverpool and AC Milan agreed the terms of Balotelli's loan return on Monday and reports in Italy have since claimed his former club have inserted a 'good behaviour' clause into his contract.

The details of the clause are thought to include a ban on extravagant hairstyles, careless social media use and irresponsible behaviour.

"I know that I cannot make any more mistakes. I will accept all of the rules," Balotelli told La Gazetta dello Sport after completing the loan switch.

"I haven't forgotten how to play football. I am 25 years old and I am no longer a kid. I've wasted too many chances.

"I knew I would find another team because I am not finished. But I am grateful to Milan, because, to tell the truth, I did not expect them to bring me back. The 'yes' from (Milan owner Silvio) Berlusconi was the biggest surprise of them all.

"Clauses in the contract? I use social network sites just like the others, someone may not like me, but I have never hurt anyone, if I have ever done any damage it is only to my career, nothing else."

On Wednesday, Balotelli penned an open letter to Liverpool fans via his Facebook account, thanking them for their support over the last 12 months.

"I'm grateful to Liverpool FC and Liverpool fans for the time and opportunities you gave me," he wrote.

"It's not a goodbye but rather a farewell. I'll be supporting you guys all the way in every competition... unless you face AC Milan."

The flamboyant striker was left out of Liverpool's pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia and had been training away from the first team in the weeks leading up to his return to Italy.

Jamie Carragher didn't pull any punches when asked his view on Mario Balotelli's loan move from Liverpool to AC Milan

Liverpool signed three forwards over the summer in Christian Benteke, Roberto Firmino and Danny Ings, while Divock Origi has also arrived at Anfield after a year on loan at Lille.

Balotelli added: "My time at Liverpool? I take my responsibilities, but the system chosen by Rodgers wasn't suited to my characteristics."

Sky Sports soccer pundit and ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher delivered a scathing assessment of his former club's decision to sign Balotelli following their Monday Night Football clash against Arsenal.

"The Balotelli one was a major mistake from the whole club, not just Brendan Rodgers but the transfer committee in bringing him in," Carragher said

Mario Balotelli was a project for Brendan Rodgers but he could not make it work

"The quicker he is moved on... they have Benteke and Sturridge coming back. I still can't believe that they signed him. He hasn't worked out and he has to move on.

"He is kidding some coaches if he gets a move to AC Milan."
