Poyet defended his transfer policy at Sunderland following recent criticism from current manager Advocaat

Gus Poyet admits he is "disappointed" with Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat's criticism of the club's former dealings in the transfer window.

Black Cats boss Advocaat, who is enduring a tough start to the season having gained just two points out of 12, told the Sunderland Echo last week that average players were brought in on big salaries.

He said on Thursday: "We had a big past here and I know a little bit about the salary of players – average players, lower than average players and that's crazy.

"People who bought those kind of players for those transfer fees and gave them those salaries didn't care about the club."

But speaking on Goals on Sunday, Poyet responded with disappointment, admitting he did not expect to hear the comment from the Dutchman.

"For Dick to say that last week, I was a little disappointed with his comment.

"I didn't expect that, he's an experienced manager, he's leaving next year he says.

"He's trying to make something happen, and is the manager going to come in next year and blame him? No, he shouldn't, because we're all professional.

If you've got something to say you should say names. He's involving people like Martin O'Neill."

Poyet was sacked as Sunderland boss in March having won just one of his last 12 Premier League games, with many of his summer signings failing to impress.

Asked which signings he thought had done well at the club, Poyet said: "Pantilimon has done very well. Jermain Defoe as well."
