Matt Le Tissier wants the Southampton squad to join him in the club’s hall of fame and become legends by winning the EFL Cup.

Southampton face Manchester United in the EFL Cup final on Sunday live on Sky Sports, which is their first major final appearance since the 2003 FA Cup against Arsenal.

Robert Pires' goal saw off the Saints at the Millennium Stadium, meaning the 1976 FA Cup victory remains their only major trophy in the club's history.

"We've only ever won one major trophy in our history, so to double that would be quite something," Le Tissier, who played 443 games for Southampton, told Sky Sports News HQ.

"This is a chance for them players to put themselves down as legends at Southampton for the rest of their lives. The guys that won the cup in 1976 are still revered to this day."

Claude Puel's men go into the game as clear underdogs as their recent form in the Premier League has dipped below their usual standards.

Southampton's 4-0 win over Sunderland in their last fixture came after a run of six defeats from their previous seven matches, which had left them just eight points above the relegation zone.

Despite their indifferent form in the Premier League, Le Tissier thinks a Wembley win would help make this season one to remember.

"If we finished in the top 10 and won a major trophy, you'd take that all day long even though we've not played great at times," he said.

"It would be a massive step forward for the club. They've got their league position better for the last seven years but the only missing was a cup run. This is their first chance in 41 years to win a major trophy.

"It would be another building block in the way the club see themselves as one that want to be challenging for Europe and trophies every season. That way you can attract players easier and keep hold of your stars for a bit longer."

Fatigue could play a part at Wembley as Southampton will have had two weeks without a match, whereas United will have played three times since then.

Le Tissier thinks the level of freshness within the camp could that give Southampton the edge.

"Hopefully that makes a bit of a difference - it could even things out a little bit," he said.

"Three games in 15 days doesn't sound much, but when you put that against Southampton having no games, we certainly know which team will be fresher going into the final."
